In paddy crops, brown planthopper (BPH) infestation causes the tillers to dry up completely as the insects suck the sap from them. This symptom appears as circular patches in the field. In a healthy situation, there should be one spider per cluster, and at most, two BPH insects per tiller. If there are no spiders, then ideally there should be no more than one BPH insect per tiller. To control the infestation:Avoid excessive application of nitrogenous. fertilizers and prevent over-irrigation. Pesticides should only be sprayed after proper drainage of water from the field. Spraying 3% neem oil or 5% neem seed kernel extract can help manage the pests. If the pest population crosses the economic threshold level, then apply any one of the following: Chlorantraniliprole 18.5% SC at 60 ml per acre, or Imidacloprid 17.8% SL at 50 ml per acre, or Pymetrozine 50% WG at 120 grams per acre to control the brown planthopper infestation.
